response to film

I thought all the points that were made were valid. When they played the different types of music while they show a painting to prove that it could convey a different meaning defiantly worked and I think that's true. Paints can have different meanings in different setting, it's almost like 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' but in terms of a painting, meaning is in the eye of the viewer and that can be changed by that persons experiences and where and when they're seeing the piece. I don't however thing that what we see before and after doesn't really change what one may think or feel, especially our generation which has grown up being able to flip channels on the tv all the time. It's just the way we grew up. Everything else made sense and I think is pretty true.

Sorry this took so long...had trouble with my account for some random reason...Anyway, I agree with everybody! Good points! Kudos ;) I believe that the way we first see paintings is not subjectively but the way we want to see them, or the impression it has on us personally. Therefore we do have an objective way of interpreting a piece of artwork. Basically, I believe that art is seen through the "innocent eye"- we have the power to change the meaning of an art piece for ourselves; we decide the way it affects us. There is not one meaning to any piece of artwork, since we all are unique, and therefore have this different "eye".

I thought it was interesting Becker's view on how music can affect the meaning of a painting and the way we respond to them. I believe different elements such as music, hues, texture and etc definitely play a vital role in how we connect with them, which was proven in this film . However, I disagree that reproducing a painting loses it's value. The reproduction of these images open our eyes to new things and the ability to know what other artists are creating. It would have been nice too if the film wasn't just based on paintings, but also focusing on sculpture and other art forms.
