I looked all over the internet for a video clip of the film Pasadena Freeway Stills by Gary Beydler. He took footage from a car driving on the Pasadena Freeway and then printed out the individual frames. He sat in front of the camera with a sheet of plexiglass between him and the camera. He had a rectangle taped off on the glass and one by one he would pick up and place a photograph in that rectangle. He did that with the thousands of photographs derived from the video (film is 24 frames a second!). Eventually it just looked like he had a small television screen on the plexiglass because the photos became a moving image. That technique is called rotoscoping.
(I didn't want to make a new post for this without the video, and types of animation seem relevant in this topic.)
